Holidays, Parties, and Your Waistline: A Survival Guide for Moms

‘Tis the season for twinkling lights, cozy gatherings… and the silent prayer that our favorite jeans still fit come January. But fear not! This year, we’re flipping the script on holiday weight gain. As a Functional Nutrition and Metabolism Specialist (and fellow mom who’s had her fair share of pie-induced panic), I’ve got your back. Let’s talk strategy – no restrictive diets or missing out on Aunt Carol’s famous cookies.

Here are 5 sanity-saving tips to navigate the festive feeding frenzy:

  1. Prioritize Protein: This is your secret weapon! Starting your day with a protein-rich breakfast or having a protein snack before a party can be a lifesaver. Protein keeps you feeling full longer, which means you’re less likely to overindulge when faced with a buffet of temptations. Think Greek yogurt, a handful of almonds, or a slice of turkey breast – small choices that make a big difference.
  2. Pick Your Must-Have Fun Food: Let’s be real – the holidays are meant for a bit of indulgence. The trick is to choose wisely. Craving your grandma’s famous apple pie? Go for it! But maybe skip the so-so store-bought cookies. It’s about enjoying your absolute favorites and passing on the rest.
  3. ‘No’ Is a Complete Sentence: Sometimes, we eat things just because they’re offered to us. Remember, you’re always allowed to say no, especially if it’s something you don’t really want or need. You’re in charge of your plate, so own it! It’s perfectly fine to politely decline and stick to what works best for you.
  4. Don’t Save Your Calories: “Saving up” for the big meal often backfires. You end up so hungry that you overeat. Instead, keep your eating routine normal throughout the day. This way, when you do hit the party, you can enjoy the special treats without feeling like a bottomless pit.
  5. Treat Holidays Like Any Other Day: It’s easy to fall into an “all or nothing” mindset during the holidays. But try treating holiday meals like any other day. Sure, you can have some mashed potatoes and pie, but also make sure there’s some protein and veggies on your plate. It’s all about balance!
